What is pruritus ani?

  • Pruritus ani is a condition resulting in an irresistible urge to scratch the skin around the anus. It is a common condition and is most noticeable and bothersome at night and after each bowel movement.

What causes pruritus ani?

  • There are a number of causes, including:
  • :: excessive cleaning of the anal area;
  • :: moisture around the anus, from excessive sweating or from moist stick stools;
  • :: skin damage caused by scratching;
  • :: poor hygiene;
  • :: some foods act as irritants e.g. spicy foods.
  • Cleanliness is almost never a factor. However the natural tendency once a person develops pruritus ani is to wash the area frequently. This almost always makes the problem worse, by irritating or damaging the skin around the anus.

Treatment

  • There is not an operation to treat pruritus ani.
  • Your GP has referred you to this consultant to rule out any medical conditions that might be causing the problem. This will involve having a thorough examination of the anal area so that the doctor can recommend treatment to eliminate any specific problem.
  • Keep the anus and the area around the anus clean. Bathe the area twice a day and after each defecation (bowel movement). The best way to wash is with a soft wet cloth or wet wipe used to cleanse babies. Avoid using soap.
  • Avoid damaging the skin around the anus. Do not scratch or itch the area as this only makes the condition worse. Avoid vigorous rubbing with a towel after washing or using harsh toilet paper.
  • Keep the skin around the anus as dry as possible. Wear loose fitting, cotton underwear. Avoiding man-made materials and tights. Applying baby powder on a cotton pad two to three tunes a day can help to absorb any excess moisture. (Avoid all medicated, perfumed and deodorant powders.)
  • Pruritus ani is often a stubborn problem that requires months of gentle skin care. If symptoms persist you may need to be referred to a Dermatologist (Consultant specialising in skin conditions).
